CBC News has this story about Mohawk's Apps for Health 2012 conference taking place today and tomorrow at the college's Fennell Campus in Hamilton. AppsforHealth is quickly becoming Ontario’s premier recruiting and networking event for the mhealth and ehealth industry. The interactive 2 day event is an opportunity for professionals and students to discuss current trends in the industry while learning more about new emerging technologies. On day two of the event students will compete for cash prizes by pitching the solutions they developed to a panel of experts. All solutions are developed in response to challenges facing real world organizations.

Mohawk College Vice President Cheryl Jensen and Mohawk Alumni of Distinction and Premier's Award recipient Marni Flaherty have received 2012 YWCA Hamilton Women of Distinction Awards. Cheryl was recognized with a Trailblazer Award while Marni received the Education and Mentorship Award. Mohawk graduate Linda Rourke served as Master of Cermonies for the annual event that recognizes exceptional women in Hamilton. Sixty women were nominated in 11 categories.

The Hamilton Spectator has this story about the partnership between the Ontario Trillium Foundation and Mohawk College. A Hamilton-based nonprofit or community group that applies for an Ontario Trillum Foundation capital grant will be selected for a community builders project in March 2013. Mohawk students supervised by faculty will donate their labour to the project.

Five Mohawk students won medals this week at the Ontario Technological Skills Competition in Waterloo. The largest skilled trades competition in Canada featured more than 1,900 student competitors in over 60 contests.

Mohawk College has established a memorial scholarship and dedicated an electronics lab to recognize the largest ever bequest from a faculty member.
Professor Heng Chan, who passed away in April 2010, bequeathed $722,091 to Mohawk. The legacy gift has been invested in scholarships and new equipment for Engineering Technology students. Mohawk has established the Heng Chan Memorial Scholarship and dedicated the Heng Chan Electronics Lab in the Faculty of Engineering Technology.
Chan also served as president of the Hamilton Chinese Cultural Society, was a member of the Hamilton Chinese Alliance Church and was an airman in the Singapore Air Defence Force.

Bike for Mike is a local, grassroots initiative dedicated to making Hamilton a more cycle-friendly city. The annual ‘Mike Ride’ raises awareness of health and environmental benefits of cycling, and helps people discover the joy of being on a bike while raising money for a great cause.
Proceeds from this year’s Mike Ride will support the Mike’s Bikes initiative, which aims to ensure that every child in Hamilton can have a bike.
This Sunday, May 6 is the 2nd annual Mike Ride at Hamilton’s beautiful Bayfront Park. Choose from 3 different routes to suit your level of cycling experience (all routes begin and end at Bayfront Park), and stick around after the ride for refreshments, live music and a community cycling expo!

The Hamilton Community News has this story about last Friday's groundbreaking for the Mohawk Recreation Centre. The 64,000 square foot centre is set to open in the Fall of 2013, across from a new MSA Plaza.
